When Should You Make Your Child’s First Dentist Appointment?

Being a parent can be wonderfully exciting, though a bit stressful and full of apprehensions, especially when it’s your first young one and everything is all new and overwhelming. While most new parents go through this, at Hoover Dental Center in Los Angeles, California, we are here to ensure you don’t figure out your child’s dental care needs alone. We are here to guide you on when you should take your child to a dentist and what to expect.

At what age should a child first visit the dentist?

While baby teeth don’t hang around forever, taking care of those tiny teeth and gums around them is crucial as they save spots for permanent teeth. While most oral care happens at home, your child’s dental care routine is never complete without dental appointments. But at what age should your child see a dentist?

According to the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), you should take your child to a dentist within six months after the first tooth shows or before their first birthday — whichever comes early. While this may seem early, it’s for a good reason. During pediatric dental visits, your dentist looks out for the development of your child’s teeth and gums. Also, we look out for signs of cavities, lesions, bruises, and other issues common in infants.

What to expect during the first pediatric visit

Your child’s first dentist appointment is more of a meet and greet. Dr. Hee Jee Yoon establishes a personal connection with you and your little one, forming a healthy foundation for future visits.

Depending on your child’s age, the first exam involves a comprehensive examination of your kid’s teeth, gums, bite, and other oral structures. Where absolutely needed, a dental x-ray can be recommended for older kids. If your child hasn’t had prophylaxis in months, we offer gentle teeth cleaning to remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line.

For most patients, however, the first pediatric visit is an opportunity to learn. Our team educates you on how to clean your child’s teeth properly. We also provide dietary counseling and answer those prickly questions you might have about your child’s dental health.
