| Structural loss in teeth occurs through external trauma or tooth decay and a dental restoration is needed. Dental Restorations restore the appearance, use, and integrity of the tooth structure. Dental restorations may require a simple filling of a cavity to the replacement of missing teeth.
Dental restorations include simple procedures that include crowns and caps, dentures and partial dentures, and root canal therapy. It is usually completed during one visit or over several visits for restorations including dentures and partial dentures.
Fillings
Crowns
A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with other types of restorations. A crown is a covering that encases tooth surface to restore its original shape and size.
Among the several types of crowns, porcelain is the most popular. They are durable and last for quite some time but eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth to give a natural smile.
Crowns are also given as restorations for broken or fractured teeth, cosmetic enhancement, decayed teeth, fracture fillings, large fillings, and teeth that have had root canals.

Root Canals
Root canal therapy is a procedure required when a tooth’s nerve tissue or pulp becomes damaged as bacteria begins to multiply within the pulp chamber. A root canal procedure removes the infected tooth pulp and nerve tissue from the tooth chamber to remove the bacteria and stop the spread of infection.
Nerve tissue and pulp may be damaged by any stress on a tooth such as tooth decay, deteriorating fillings, and cracks or chips in the tooth that would allow bacteria to enter the tooth’s chamber and begin damage. Severe toothaches, sensitivity to hot and cold long after contact, and darkening of the tooth are some of the symptoms that indicate problems and the need for a root canal.
After a root canal therapy procedure the tooth is capped with a temporary crown and eventually a permanent crown is installed within a few weeks. |
